But what do you do to encourage families to trust that schools have these plans in place? How do we gain families trust?

That’s a valid and tough question. At the very least, we can be transparent about our stance, our limitations, and the protocols in place, so families have the information they need to make decisions for themselves.

The unfortunate truth is that not all schools, districts, or boards of education are prioritizing protections for students in the same way. And beyond that, there are leaders who simply don’t know the information shared in this article. That’s why it’s just as important to ensure that school leaders are informed about their responsibilities and the protections that do exist. When leaders are equipped with knowledge, they are better positioned to build trust with families and advocate for students in meaningful ways.
